Spiderweb Sof: Hi. I'm here. When does the fun start? Puddin' Taine: Cool beans. Puddin' Taine: it's been very very quiet... I've just been idling watching TV waiting... heh Spiderweb Sof: Looks like there's time for me to go make a pot of coffee. Spiderweb Sof: Mmmmm. Coffee. DragonPup: yeah man:) Spiderweb Sof: Mmmmmm. Coffee. DragonPup: Ew, coffee evil Puddin' Taine: You ever try to give Coffee to Spider? Puddin' Taine: coffee, rather Spiderweb Sof: It's no more harmful than any other bitter, addictive, expensive substance. DragonPup: Pepsi is better thn coffee DragonPup: *has work tommorrow:(* DragonPup: I work at CompUSA....wheeee Spiderweb Sof: Wow. This Hotlina is one noisy program. It keeps beeping and whizzing and blooping and making gassy noises, like, every second or so. Puddin' Taine: Intellegence at CompUSA? can it be? Puddin' Taine: heh, turn off the nonsense in the prefs Dreamer: You can turn the sounds off MacFury.com: Yep, noisy it is. :) Spiderweb Sof: Now here's an idea. DragonPup: Not all CompUSAs are bad Puddin' Taine: The local one here is abysmal DragonPup: Mine hs one o the best Apple stores in the regioin DragonPup: if not the best Spiderweb Sof: Have buttons which broadcast little communicative noises, like laughter, or boos, or applause. MacFury.com: I had the Star Wars soundset once, quite a interesting one. Puddin' Taine: on par with Frys Dreamer: where are you? Spiderweb Sof: Sure, it would be unbelievably annoying. Spiderweb Sof: But this is not inherently a problem. Puddin' Taine: In south San Jose, CA DragonPup: Me? Massachusetts Dreamer: oh Spiderweb Sof: Me? In my basement. DragonPup: *pokes jeff* lulio | mac: Ahh, Jeff, a dirty basement is nothing to be ashamed of... :) MacFury.com: Good old spring cleaning time soon. Spiderweb Sof: It's not a shame issue so much as a tripping over things issue. MacFury.com: I do that all the time. Brian: Which one is Jeff? Spiderweb Sof: My name is Jeff Vogel, president of Spiderweb Software, Inc. Spiderweb Sof: We are a small company, two full-timers plus a bunch of freelancers. Spiderweb Sof: We make fine shareware games, such as the Exile series. Spiderweb Sof: And now Nethergate. Spiderweb Sof: They are all fantasy role-playing games, lovingly hand-crafted in our basement. Spiderweb Sof: You beat stuff up, take their money, and use it to buy stuff to beat people up more efficiently. Spiderweb Sof: We are in Seattle. Spiderweb Sof: Where it rains a lot. Spiderweb Sof: That's it, for now. Freedumb -- W: Spiderweb Sof: (How do I signify that I'm done?) -=Sha: You say "I'm done"? :) Erica, MGL Ac: You can type gh like World Without Borders does MGL Warren: GA stands for "Go Ahead" MacAvenger: next! Erica, MGL Ac: uhm, right Erica, MGL Ac: Okay, so your latest game is Nethergate. Can you describe that? Spiderweb Sof: Well, it takes place in ancient England, Spiderweb Sof: in this remote corner where a few pitiful shreds of magic still exist. Spiderweb Sof: The Celts (i.e. the oppressed natives) are trying to do something to free themselves from the grip of the ROman Empire. Spiderweb Sof: The Roman soldiers are there trying to stop them.\ Spiderweb Sof: And you play both sides of the story, one after another. Spiderweb Sof: So, first, you can play the good guys and then play the bad guys, and see both sidesof the storyline. Spiderweb Sof: Plus, there are the standard rpg trappings. Spiderweb Sof: Quests. Ingenious dungeons. Beating people up. Spiderweb Sof: GA str: whats the next game from you guys Erica, MGL Ac: Asro0, no chatting please Spiderweb Sof: That's a good question. Spiderweb Sof: GA Erica, MGL Ac: Here is a question from... Erica, MGL Ac: Puddin' Taine Erica, MGL Ac: Was there any particular event that lead to the idea of using the well adapted Roman setting for Nethergate Spiderweb Sof: A particular event? Not really. Spiderweb Sof: I've just always found the Romans really fascinating. And the Celts too. Spiderweb Sof: When I was figuring out where to set Nethergate, I wanted to do something apart from the standard fantasy stuff. Spiderweb Sof: I decided to do something historical. Spiderweb Sof: And from there, the Romans and Celts were a natural. Spiderweb Sof: Plus, I got to read lots of books abotu them, which was fun. Spiderweb Sof: GA Erica, MGL Ac: Here is a question from Brian: Erica, MGL Ac: I heard that Nethergate would be an online RPG. Is this true? Spiderweb Sof: It is online. You go online to get the demo, and then you can go online to order it. Spiderweb Sof: But it's not lot Ultima Online or Clan Lord. It's one player. Spiderweb Sof: I've never been too interested in doing somethine multiplayer. It's a crowded market, and I wouldn't know how to program it. Spiderweb Sof: GA MGL Warren: Puddin' Taine asks: MGL Warren: Was creating an original music score ever a consideration in the development process of Nethergate? And if not, why was it left out? Spiderweb Sof: Whenever I'm trying to decide whether to put something into a game or not, I ask one question: Spiderweb Sof: "Is this something I would like?" CRYSTAL~SHIP: IS there a chat here tonight? Spiderweb Sof: I've never liked music in games. It's always bugged me. So I always leave it out. <<< CRYSTAL~SHIP is now known as ~H~Quazi~R~ >>> Spiderweb Sof: It's not always the most popular decision, but nothing's perfect. Spiderweb Sof: GA Erica, MGL Ac: I am wondering why you don't like music in games. Spiderweb Sof: Because even the best music in the world starts to drive me mad when I hear it again and again and again and again and so on and so on. Spiderweb Sof: Consider Zelda 64. Spiderweb Sof: Zelda had as good music as I've ver heard in a game. Spiderweb Sof: Really well done. Spiderweb Sof: It still drove me completely up the wall. Spiderweb Sof: GA Ian [MiC]: moo MGL Warren: Next question: MGL Warren: Does Nethergate support other (custom) scenarios? Will there ever be a map editor-type thing for Nethergate? Spiderweb Sof: No, and not for a very long time. Spiderweb Sof: Nethergate has a much trickier engine than Exile. Much tricker to design for. Spiderweb Sof: The Blades scenario editor was very difficult to make and maintain. Spiderweb Sof: Nethergate would be much harder to do that for. Spiderweb Sof: GA Erica, MGL Ac: A question from Cap'n Hack: Erica, MGL Ac: "what programming language do spiderweb use?" Spiderweb Sof: C! Spiderweb Sof: And CodeWarrior! Spiderweb Sof: The only true development environment for a Klingon Warrior! Spiderweb Sof: GA Erica, MGL Ac: Another question from Brian Erica, MGL Ac: "Does Spiderweb Software ever plan/hope on doing more than just shareware games ... or expanding the company? Spiderweb Sof: Probably not. Spiderweb Sof: The computer game industry is very difficult right now. Spiderweb Sof: Very disfunctional. Very insane. Spiderweb Sof: Very, very difficult to break into. Spiderweb Sof: If you aren't Sony or Origin or Sierra, it's EXTREMELY difficult to get your product onto shelves. ~H~Quazi~R~: or BLizzard Spiderweb Sof: It's just not a fight I'm eager to get into. Spiderweb Sof: I like shareware, and it's been very good to me. Spiderweb Sof: So I'll stick with it. Spiderweb Sof: Don't get me started on the state of this industry. It's pretty freaky. Spiderweb Sof: GA Erica, MGL Ac: A question from MacAvenger: Erica, MGL Ac: "What is the average gaming time this game can offer?" Spiderweb Sof: Right now, I can't be sure, since nobody has ever gotten to the end. Spiderweb Sof: Based on a simple extrapolative process, Spiderweb Sof: We believe that someone can finish it in between 4 and 5 thousand hours of play. Spiderweb Sof: Ha ha. Spiderweb Sof: Just kidding. Spiderweb Sof: Hmmm. That's a toughie. Spiderweb Sof: Depends on how many of the multitudes of side quests and little adventures you go on. Spiderweb Sof: If you blazed straight to the end, Spiderweb Sof: Probably between 70 hours, Spiderweb Sof: and 5 thousand hours. Spiderweb Sof: GA Erica, MGL Ac: So that would be a rough estimate? Erica, MGL Ac: :-) Erica, MGL Ac: Another question from MacAvenger: Spiderweb Sof: Pretty rough. It also depends on if you play Romans or Celts or both. Erica, MGL Ac: "Does both the celtic side and the roman side go trough the sames dungeon/maps? In other words, is it the same adventure for both just the characters changing?" Spiderweb Sof: Obviously, if you only play one half of the game, the time will drop. Spiderweb Sof: They will go through the same physical layouts, but the adventures themselves are extremely different. Spiderweb Sof: For example, for the Celts, the Temple of Brigantia is a very pleasant place, Spiderweb Sof: where you can get healing and quests and spells. Spiderweb Sof: For the Romans, it's a place where you go to FIGHT. Spiderweb Sof: And loot and pillage and so on. Spiderweb Sof: There are a small number of places where the monsters and quests are the same. Spiderweb Sof: But, since the skills of the ROmans and Celts are extremely different, playing through them is a very different experience. ~H~Quazi~R~: Sounds like Diablo to me :) Spiderweb Sof: Plus, there are some things in the plot that are confusing and mysterious when you play one side, Spiderweb Sof: but are then made clear when you play the other. Spiderweb Sof: GA MGL Warren: Next question: MGL Warren: "How long does a game like Nethergate take to develop, from start to finish, and what would you say takes the most time? Programming? Writing the story?" Spiderweb Sof: Objectively, about a year. Spiderweb Sof: Subjectively, about a million, jillion years. Spiderweb Sof: I spent 1 year thinking abotu Nethergate, and then 1 year actually bringing it into reality. Spiderweb Sof: GA Erica, MGL Ac: 1 year of planning? Spiderweb Sof: Yeah. Just general thought. Spiderweb Sof: Figuring out how to make the 3-D thing and the different elevations in the town work. Spiderweb Sof: Figuring out how the plot would go and what the interface would look liki. Spiderweb Sof: Many hours go into any game before even the first thing gets written down or the first line of code gets written. Spiderweb Sof: GA Erica, MGL Ac: A question from Brian: Erica, MGL Ac: Do people tend more often to "buy" the shareware title or just download it from you (without "registering it"). In other words, is Spiderweb Software doing okay financially? Spiderweb Sof: We are doing very well financially. Spiderweb Sof: We have no reasonable complaints. Erica, MGL Ac: Yay! Spiderweb Sof: And, if someone downloads the demo, plays it, doesn't like it, and deletes it, Spiderweb Sof: I have exactly no problem with that. Spiderweb Sof: Hey, if I felt otherwise, I wouldn't be writing shareware. Spiderweb Sof: I love the shareware concept. Spiderweb Sof: GA MGL Warren: DragonPup wants to know: MGL Warren: About how many have registered Nethergate thus far? Spiderweb Sof: Obviously, I can only give an approximate figure for such things. Spiderweb Sof: Between 100 and 350000 people have registered Nethergate. Spiderweb Sof: Let's just say that we've been pleased. Spiderweb Sof: GA MGL Warren: ~H~Quazi~R~ wants to know: MGL Warren: Is there a game, movie, or book, etc. that inspired you to make Nethergate? Spiderweb Sof: What inspired me to write Nethergate? Hmmmm ... Spiderweb Sof: Well, of course, the main thing that inspired me to write Nethergate is the morgtage on my house. Spiderweb Sof: In terms of the whole Roman/Celt thing, Spiderweb Sof: I'd have to point to one of the most perfect TV shows ever created: Spiderweb Sof: I, Claudius. Spiderweb Sof: Great book, too. Spiderweb Sof: As for the Celts, I've been int he Society For Creative Anachronism (SCA) for some time. Spiderweb Sof: There's a lot of study of Celtic culture in that group, Spiderweb Sof: and you learn a lot of cool stuff. Spiderweb Sof: About how they lived, Spiderweb Sof: what they believed, Spiderweb Sof: and whether they liked to burn people alive for luck. Spiderweb Sof: Those were two huge influences in getting me to design what I did. Spiderweb Sof: GA Erica, MGL Ac: A question from Brian: Erica, MGL Ac: "Will the graphical engine used in Nethergate be put to some more ingenius use in the near future, or would dropping the isometric view in favor of something else be a possibility?" Spiderweb Sof: The next game will definitely use the Nethergate engine. Spiderweb Sof: And, of course, we will always be striving to figure out cool things to do with it. Spiderweb Sof: Nethergate just scratched the surface. Spiderweb Sof: GA Erica, MGL Ac: I have a correction that the question just asked was really from Puddin' Taine. Erica, MGL Ac: Astro asks Erica, MGL Ac: "Is there a possibility of Nethergate2? If so - What will be it like?" Spiderweb Sof: Nethergate II? Not for a while. Spiderweb Sof: I suppose I should say what our next game will probably be. Spiderweb Sof: The working title is Avernus. Spiderweb Sof: This, by the way, is a scoop. Spiderweb Sof: We only came up with this name last night. Spiderweb Sof: See, we once wrote this game called Exile. Spiderweb Sof: It was pretty neat and very archaic. It's got a lot of good ideas, Spiderweb Sof: but nobody buys it anymore, because it's so old and creaky. Spiderweb Sof: So we're going to rebuild it. <<< unnamed is now known as Joe Generic >>> Spiderweb Sof: From the ground up. Spiderweb Sof: More quests. More personalities. More stuff. Spiderweb Sof: Piles of good ideas. <<< Naven is now known as Naven >>> Erica, MGL Ac: Will you scoop us with what Avernus means? Spiderweb Sof: Plus better town designs and graphics that look like they were done in this century. Spiderweb Sof: Avernus is a lake in Italy. Spiderweb Sof: It was also considered, in ancient times, to be the gate to the underworld. Spiderweb Sof: Other potential names are Acheron, Gehenna, and Tartarus. Spiderweb Sof: The back of the old AD&D Player's Handbook is a great source for names. Spiderweb Sof: GA MGL Warren: Okay, next question: MGL Warren: Is Spiderweb Software your full-time job at the moment? Spiderweb Sof: Ewww. I just noticed that Friends is on. Spiderweb Sof: Ewww. Spiderweb Sof: Yep, Spiderweb has been my full-time job since 1995. Spiderweb Sof: Now, it's two people's full-time job. Spiderweb Sof: The recent games have been far too difficult and time-consuming to do on a part-time basis. Spiderweb Sof: It's very difficult to actually finish a shareware rpg. It's very easy to get it 9/10 done, and then all of a sudden get stuck. Spiderweb Sof: I fully sympathize with Glenn Andreas, for example, and the Delver project. Spiderweb Sof: It's really easy to go a long way down the road and then hit this really difficult barrier and take forever to get past it. Spiderweb Sof: Being full-time and having no choice but to finish the game is how I deal with this. Spiderweb Sof: A lot of promising games hit that barrier, sink, and are never heard from again. Spiderweb Sof: GA MGL Warren: Next question: MGL Warren: What style games do you like to play in that rare commodity called 'spare time'? Spiderweb Sof: I am a HUGE Deer Hunter fan. Spiderweb Sof: I can stare at that screen for hours. ~H~Quazi~R~: omg ~H~Quazi~R~: opps Erica, MGL Ac: no kidding Spiderweb Sof: Last night I bagged an 8 points. Spiderweb Sof: Eight! Spiderweb Sof: Sorry ... an 8 pointer. Spiderweb Sof: Eight. DragonPup: What about Deer Avenger? Spiderweb Sof: Can you imagine how many hours I logged trying to get there? Spiderweb Sof: I don't play Deer Avenger. Erica, MGL Ac: I don't think I want to know. <<< Erica, MGL Accounts is now known as Erica, MGL Goddess >>> Spiderweb Sof: You see, I think that hunting on your computer has a certain quiet dignity. Spiderweb Sof: I do not believe in sullying it by playing such "parody" games. Erica, MGL Go: Please enlighten us with how Deer Hunter has quiet dignity. Spiderweb Sof: I also think that the role-playing aspects of Deer Hunter are highly underrated. Spiderweb Sof: Excuse me for a moment while I regain my composure. Spiderweb Sof: ... Spiderweb Sof: Just kidding. Spiderweb Sof: What do I play now? Spiderweb Sof: Baldur's Gate. And lots of it. Spiderweb Sof: Over the years, I've gotten pretty jaded about computer games. Spiderweb Sof: I mainly play games which I feel I can learn something from. Spiderweb Sof: I play them in a very analytical way, Spiderweb Sof: figuring out what they did right and wrong. Spiderweb Sof: Before Baldur's Gate, I played a lot fo Alpha Centauri. Spiderweb Sof: Alas, the most cutting edge games aren't on the Mac. Spiderweb Sof: Which stinks. Spiderweb Sof: Though, in all seriousness, Spiderweb Sof: EVERY computer game designer should take a HARD look at Deer Hunter. Spiderweb Sof: It is now easily the best selling computer game. Spiderweb Sof: Period. Spiderweb Sof: If people can't see the charms of Deer Hunter, they need to look harded. Erica, MGL Go: GA? Spiderweb Sof: Oops. Harder. Spiderweb Sof: Because someone has discovered a huge market there. Spiderweb Sof: GA ~H~Quazi~R~: like tracking deer poop? Erica, MGL Go: tsk tsk tsk Quazi Spiderweb Sof: Mmmmm. Deer poop. Mmmmm. Erica, MGL Go: Another question from Brian Erica, MGL Go: "What's your opinion of games from the "big" gaming companies, such as Bungie's Myth series, or Blizzard's Starcraft and Diablo? Are there any concepts that you try to have similar in your games, or are there certain concepts that you like not to have" Spiderweb Sof: I always go for the Wow Neat factor. Spiderweb Sof: Something that makes the player pause an go "Wow. Neat." Spiderweb Sof: My favorite example of this in my games in the place in Exile III where you can buy a house. Spiderweb Sof: Or the way you can be amoral in Fallout. Spiderweb Sof: Or that cruiser thing in Starcraft that carries a pile of small ships. Spiderweb Sof: Things that enchant people. I'm always looking for that. Spiderweb Sof: Plus, of course, interesting interface ideas. Spiderweb Sof: And ways of structuring scenarios and quests. Spiderweb Sof: GA *** The Manchurian Canidate just bagged an Earl in Deer Avenger. MGL Warren: ~H~Quazi~H~ asks: MGL Warren: What applications were used to make the graphics for Nethergate? Spiderweb Sof: I'm not sure. My artists did them. Spiderweb Sof: They were mainly assembled in Photoshop, DeBabelizer, and ClarisWorks. Spiderweb Sof: GA Spiderweb Sof: Oh, wait. The artist used Bryce a lot. Spiderweb Sof: GA MGL Warren: Next question: MGL Warren: How did you get started with programming? Spiderweb Sof: I started programming when I was in junior high. Spiderweb Sof: You see, I was what we refer to in the gaming industry Spiderweb Sof: as a "geek". Spiderweb Sof: I thought computer games were the greatest thing int he world, Spiderweb Sof: and I spent hours and hours programming and designing them as a kid. Spiderweb Sof: Sort of obsessive, actually. Spiderweb Sof: A childhood-long apprenticeship. Spiderweb Sof: GA MGL Warren: What computer did you start on, and in what language? Spiderweb Sof: Apple II+. Basic. Spiderweb Sof: GA MGL Warren: Next: MGL Warren: Do you like to play your own games when they are complete, or do you get too sick of them during developement and beta testing? Spiderweb Sof: The latter. Spiderweb Sof: God, but I loathe my games. Spiderweb Sof: I can't stand the sight of them. Spiderweb Sof: Hmmm. Spiderweb Sof: Actually, to be honest, Nethergate is the first of my games I ever actually played and enjoyed afterwards. Spiderweb Sof: Though not for very long. Spiderweb Sof: There are some things in Nethergate that are pretty darn neat. Spiderweb Sof: GA MGL Warren: Okay... MGL Warren: Do you have any desire to make games other than RPGs in the future? Spiderweb Sof: Yes. Spiderweb Sof: Wow, I have so many ideas for other sorts of games. Spiderweb Sof: But here's the thing. Spiderweb Sof: I know rpgs sell. Spiderweb Sof: I don't know that other games I write will sell. Spiderweb Sof: So cowardice keeps me cranking out rpgs. Spiderweb Sof: GA MGL Warren: Okay, do we have any last questions? Spiderweb Sof: Yes. Where's my coffee? Puddin' Taine: I sent off a few to Erica... Spiderweb Sof: Oh .... here it is. Spiderweb Sof: Mmmmmm. MGL Chuckey: Hmm, tea is better for you. =) Erica, MGL Go: Hush! People from Seattle need coffee. I know from personal experience. The Manchuria: Arn't you coder types supposed to be addicted to Jolt? :P Spiderweb Sof: Jolt. Ewwwww. Erica, MGL Go: Actually, I think that if you have a great idea Mr. Vogel then you should be confident about your game making ability. VT DanD: Erica: I'm from Seattle, and I can't stand coffee. ~H~Quazi~R~: Now that your a stud game programmer how are the ladies :) ~H~Quazi~R~: PS I' ~H~Quazi~R~: A loser too Spiderweb Sof: My wife is lovely. Any hard questions? MGL Warren: Okay, we have one more question: MGL Warren: Do you have any advice for how to get started in programming? Spiderweb Sof: Get a few books on how to do it and a copy of CodeWarrior. Spend many hours. There is no other way. Spiderweb Sof: GA The Manchuria: I've heard people rave about the superiorities of Java to C++... any chance of you ever converting? :) *** The Manchurian Canidate has no idea himself. Erica, MGL Go: Mr. Vogel needs to get going so here is the part where he gives away a copy of Nethergate to one lucky person. Necromancer: whoa Necromancer: good timing unnamed: cool Spiderweb Sof: So here's an Exile trivia question. Erica, MGL Go: Mr. Vogel, would you like to ask the trivia question? Erica, MGL Go: First person to answer wins! Spiderweb Sof: What major city in Exile I has been destroyed when Exile II starts? MGL Warren: (Answer correctly, that is.) Necromancer: the big one MacAvenger: hehe Necromancer: hehe The Manchuria: Yeah.. it was big! Puddin' Taine: my memory sucks too bad Brian: I don't know. Necromancer: aaargh Brian: (Does that count?) :-) MGL Chuckey: Heh, and the winner is Necromancer.
