You can create custom spells with Special Items, much like the Sceptre in Valley of Dying Things. Say I had a special item-spell called 'Divine Intervention.' When used, it could heavily heal the party, bless them etc. What's cunning is that when used, it calls a Random Value? special node first. There's a 25% chance that the spell power is worn out and they can't use it any more (eg the item is lost.) Other ideas for this: Create an Item called Lightning Bolt, which, when thrown, does magic damage. (Or have it like a wand.) The Special Item-Spell "Call Lightning" gives you it when activated. Of course, you have to also attatch a timer that'll check 5 moves or so after you used the Call Lightning to burn you if you're still holding it. Or you can have a special item called Cauldron that checks to see if you have any custom alchemical ingredients equipped and makes a potion if you have. By the way, on Stareye's excellent section on Special Spells, there's a possibility of summoning monsters (with a Town Encounter) or creating fields. Both of these are great for adding spice to 'boss' monsters- esp. if you use antimagic or sleep fields.
